Purpose:

To provide, as a member of the counseling department staff, a comprehensive counseling program for students and specifically provide services to meet the needs of assigned students; consult with teachers, staff, and parents to enhance effectiveness in helping students; and to provide support to other school educational programs.


Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field from an accredited university or college.
  • Current Montana Educators License.
  • Current Endorsement in School Counseling K-12

 

Essential Job Duties:

  • Implement the school guidance curriculum through the delivery of classroom units and infusion in content areas.
  • Guide individuals and groups of students through the development of educational plans.
  • Provide counseling services to individual students and small groups to support students in addressing academic, social, emotional, and behavioral challenges.
  • Consult with teachers, staff, and parents regarding the developmental needs of students.
  • Identify student needs and make referrals to appropriate school personnel, program specialists, or community agencies to ensure access to necessary services and supports.
  • Participate in, coordinate and conduct activities that contribute to the effective operation of the counseling program and school.
  • Participate in and facilitate the intervention team process.
  • Plan and evaluate the building counseling program.
  • Work collaboratively with other counselors and counseling staff; and work cooperatively with other school and district staff.
  • Maintain knowledge of school schedules, including the master schedule and procedures for changing student schedules.  
  • Pursue continuous professional growth.

 

Knowledge Skills Abilities:

  • Knowledge of child development and counseling theories, including individual, group, and crisis counseling techniques; ability to manage student behavior and support student well-being.
  • Knowledge of post-secondary pathways, including college admissions, scholarships, and Career & Technical Education (CTE) opportunities.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with students, parents, and staff; facilitate group discussions; and work collaboratively with diverse individuals and teams.
  • Ability to analyze situations, interpret guidelines, identify issues, and develop effective action plans.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, manage schedules, coordinate meetings and events, meet deadlines, and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Skill in preparing and maintaining accurate records, gathering and analyzing data, and using relevant software applications.
  • Skill in operating classroom technology and equipment, including computers and digital applications used for instruction and data management.
  • Knowledge of safety practices and ability to adhere to district policies, legal requirements, and ethical standards, including confidentiality (FERPA).
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, follow district and Board policies, and perform duties with professionalism and accountability.
  • Ability to manage students with disciplinary problems.
  • Ability to perform duties with awareness of all District requirements and Board policies.
