Reports to:               Principal or KidsLINK Coordinator

 

Status:                     3 hours/day 3:00 pm to 6:0 pm 

 

Location:                  Elementary Schools

Purpose

 

The job of After-School Program Assistant is done for the purpose(s) of assisting in the supervision and instruction of school children, providing age appropriate activities and assisting students with homework as may be required.

 

Essential Job Duties

  • Cleans work areas (e.g. classroom, storage, work tables, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining an orderly environment.
  • Coordinates program activities (e.g. games, art, music, homework, etc.) for the purpose of addressing the individual and/or group needs of children.
  • Evaluates situations (e.g. disciplinary problems, hazardous conditions, etc.) for the purpose of taking appropriate action and/or directing to appropriate personnel for resolution.
  • Facilitates the development of After School Programs (e.g. materials, activities, events, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring quality programs and resources.
  • Interacts with children in various activities (e.g. snack time, group or individual play, etc.) for the purpose of providing for a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Participates in various meetings (e.g. staff development, staff meetings, etc.) for the purpose of sharing information and/or improving one's skill/knowledge.
  • May perform record keeping and clerical functions (e.g. attendance, library materials, scheduling, copying, etc.) for the purpose of supporting the teacher and/or administrator in providing necessary records/materials.
  • Sets Up after-school program location (e.g., games, art projects, etc.) for the purpose of providing for adequate preparation for activities.
  • Helps in preparing and facilitating health snacks.
  • Works under limited supervision following standardized practices and/or methods.
  • Leads, guides and coordinates students.

Knowledge Skills Abilities

  • Skill in performing multiple, non-technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. 
  • Skill in operating equipment used in an after school program.
  • Skill in administering first aid and adhering to safety practices.
  • Knowledge of basic math, including calculations using fractions, percentages, and/or ratios.
  • Knowledge of reading a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others.
  • Knowledge and understanding of complex, multi-step written and oral instructions. 
  • Knowledge of age appropriate activities, stages/needs of child development, safety practices and procedures.
  • Ability to schedule a significant number of activities, meetings, and/or events, gather, collate, and/or classify data and consider a number of factors when using equipment.
  • Ability to be flexible and work independently and was a team in a wide variety of circumstances.
  • Ability to work with significant diversity of individuals and/or groups;
  • Ability to work with data of widely varied types and/or purposes.
  • Ability to utilize and operate a variety of job-related equipment. 
  • Ability to work effectively with others.
  • Ability to use independent problem solving techniques and to analyze issues and create action plans. 
  • Ability to interpret guidelines.
  • Ability to adapt to changing work priorities.
  • Ability to work and communicate with diverse groups.
  • Ability to maintain student confidentiality.
  • Ability to work tactfully with students, staff and parents.

 

Required Qualifications

 

  • Any combination of training, education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school.

 

Preferred Qualifications

 

  • Successful experience working with elementary school age children.
  • Certification in CPR and First Aid.

 

Necessary special requirements:

 

  • Montana Driver’s license or the ability to obtain license within three months of hire date.
  • May be required to obtain CPR/First Aid certification upon hire.

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Required to be able to hear conversations in loud and quiet environments.
  • May be required to lift or carry up to 10-30 pounds on a regular basis with or without an accommodation.
  • Guidance and reinforcement are usually available.
  • The employee frequently works within time constraints and must maintain attentiveness intensity.
  • Frequently involved in interactions which require oral and written communications.
  • Exercises flexibility and the ability to shift from one task to another.
  • Occasional travel/mobiility between schools, or between schools and the Administration office, may be required.
  • Occasionally works near moving mechanical parts.
  • Effective hearing and speech abilities.
  • Work area is generally a hazard free environment.
  • Demonstrates regular attendance performing duties as described.
  • Reports to work fit for duty with characteristics inherent to the position.
