Job Summary:

Under supervision of the appropriate administrator, the incumbent performs a variety of comprehensive custodial work to support school functions and programs. The incumbent shall value and promote the mission and vision of the district. The Head Custodian facilitates the efficient operation of the assigned department by performing a variety custodial task and provides students, staff, and the community with a safe, comfortable, clean, and efficient place in which to learn, play and develop.

Essential Functions Duties/Responsibilities:

• Oversees all custodial staff in the school building(s) to ensure that students are housed in a clean, safe, and pleasant school facility.
• Oversees the custodial staff in the school building(s) to assure tasks assigned to custodial staff are completed and performed to a high quality.
• Recommends to the Custodial Supervisor and Building Principal the assigned work area and work hours for the custodial staff.
• Assists the Custodial Supervisor and Building Principal with the evaluation of the job performance of the custodial staff.
• Provides for the removal of snow.
• Answers to emergency calls related to the operation of the school building(s).
• Assumes the responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of the heating, ventilation, and cooling systems by custodial staff. To include the development of a periodic maintenance schedule for HVAC and other building systems.
• Responsible for the in-service training of the custodial staff.
• Orders and maintains an inventory of supplies needed for the operation and maintenance of their school building and grounds.
• Coordinates the receiving of supplies and equipment form freight haulers for their building.
• Maintains on a regular schedule all motors and other mechanical equipment requiring scheduled servicing.
• Develops an ongoing program of general maintenance, upkeep, and repair.
• Conducts periodic inspections and tests of all electrical installations in the school to insure their safe condition.
• Provides temporary help when regular staff are absent.
• Performs general cleaning and janitorial duties in the common areas of the building.
• Performs minor repairs and maintenance such as replacing light fixtures or unclogging pipes.
• Assists in cleaning and sanitizing restrooms, cafeteria, common areas, gyms, and other areas in the building
• Performs limited grounds maintenance such as mowing and trimming lawns and hedges and cleaning snow from sidewalks.
• Ensures heating and cooling systems are operational.
• Maintains a neat and orderly custodial room; ensures cleaning and maintenance supplies are stocked.
• Washes windows.
• Assists in examining school for safety hazards; reports deficiencies to lead custodian, principal, and/or school resource officer.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

• Ability to supervise assigned personnel in a fair and equitable manner
• Knowledge of safety hazards and proper use of various cleaning and sanitizing solutions.
• Detail-oriented and thorough.
• Ability to perform basic repairs and operate tools or equipment used in routine maintenance.
• Ability to keep the school clean and orderly.
• Ability to interact with staff, students, parents, and visitors at school while remaining professional, polite, and courteous.
• Ability to use of power equipment to buff and restore floors and shampoo carpets; b) regular and routine dusting, mopping, vacuuming, emptying trash and cleaning restrooms; and c) routine maintenance to custodial equipment.

Education and Experience:

• High School Diploma or equivalent
• Valid Montana State Boiler’s License or ability to obtain within six months of starting the position
• Three to five years of experience in custodial role
• Must pass Background check and board approval
• All regular, non-temporary positions assigned to this classification are represented by a labor union and subject to the terms and conditions of the MFPE Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Working Conditions:

• Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
• Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
• The incumbent will experience interruptions while performing normal duties during the regular workday.
• The incumbent will have contact, in person. via email, or on the telephone, with faculty, management, staff and the general public.

Physical Requirements:

• Prolonged periods standing.
• Must be able to lift, bend, stoop, climb, reach, and lift up to 40 pounds at a time.
• Operates custodial equipment
